«Повість минулих літ» (ПВЛ), первинні джерела якої дійшли до наших днів і створені наприкінці XIII століття, є одним із найважливіших джерел ранньої історії Русі. Проте, з точки зору критичного аналізу, вона не стільки документує реальність, скільки формує міфологічне обґрунтування для соціальної, політичної та релігійної системи, необхідної церковній владі, яка в той час залишалася чи не єдиною стабільною вертикаллю управління.
