The early 20th century saw the advent of wax paper, which was the predecessor to today’s kitchen wraps. Thin and made of wax paper, this product served to wrap sandwiches and cover food items minimally to protect them from exposure to air and moisture. It was somewhat effective but had some disadvantages concerning sealing and the work’s longevity.
